EIA (Equine Infectious Anemia) is a viral disease that affects the horses’ immune system. It is a reportable disease and all positive cases must be filed with the state veterinarians and federal Animal and Plant Inspection Service (APHIS) office. All labs and technicians must be USDA certified to run this test.
EIA is transmitted by blood via biting insects such as mosquitoes, horse flies, and deer flies. Using a dirty needle between horses can also transmit the disease. There is no cure or vaccine for this disease.
Symptoms include: Depression, Decrease in appetite, Lethargy, Fever, Weakness, Sweating, Edema of the legs and ventral abdomen, Rapid weight loss, Colic, Abortion Horses are tested yearly for EIA and a negative coggins test is required at most boarding, show and racing facilities. If you are crossing state lines with your horse you will also need a negative coggins test along with a health certificate.

Our laboratory has been a USDA approved Coggins (Equine Infectious Anemia) testing laboratory since 2000. We offer traditional paper coggins testing for referring veterinarians, and are excied to now offer electronic coggins testing through GlobalVetLINK. We provide fast and accurate testing for our referring veterinarians whether you mail in or drop off the samples. All coggins testing is performed weekly on Wednesdays with results reported by Thursday afternoon. We ask that your testing samples be at our clinic on Tuesdays to have them run on Wednesday. We also offer STAT services for an additional fee.
